excerpt from chapter 11 - Science and Morality
The human body is clearly a physical thing that is subject to and animated by the human spirit. Everyone has heard of the old phrase, “Mind over matter.” Experience has also taught many of us that there is some truth to that statement. Science has not yet gone far enough to prove which occurs first; does a particular genetic condition arise in the human body, thus causing a particular behavior, or does a particular behavior cause a particular genetic response on a molecular level of the body? The Bible tells us that God will allow curses and blessings to follow several generations through a family, also implying that perhaps the curses are genetic in nature, but the genetic aspect of it is not dominate; rather, the spiritual aspect. In other words, our behavior, our choices that we make, regardless of our generation or line in the family tree, may, by the authority of scripture and by the grace of Almighty God, have an impact that is dominant over our physical being for good or for evil and also in the development of the physical bodies of our children.
The Bible teaches that God has created paths of righteousness for us to walk in[i] and that when we do, we will be blessed; even healed, thus suggesting that the actions we commit are in fact spiritual in nature and have an impact on the body. The Bible also teaches that the opposite is true, that if we walk in paths of wickedness, then we will receive in our bodies the just recompense of our reward.[ii] This also suggests that the actions we commit are also spiritual in nature, having an impact on the body and the mind, even and perhaps on a molecular or genetic level.
